Neil Warnock believes Graham Potter will be ‘terrified’ of coming up against ‘egos he’s never met in his life’ at Chelsea… but the former Palace and Leeds boss is confident that his coaching ‘will see him through’ at Stamford Bridge

  • Warnock believes the ex-Brighton man will work well with Chelsea’s youngsters

Neil Warnock thinks that new Chelsea manager will be terrified by the prospect of coaching some of the egos in the Blues’ dressing room.

The former Leeds, Sheffield United and Crystal Palace manager claimed that Potter will be facing challenges at Stamford Bridge that he would never have encountered at Brighton but that he will be able to rely on his own fine record as a coach.

Potter took over as manager of Chelsea after new co-owner Todd Boehly sacked Thomas Tuchel just seven games into the new season, and Potter has since won twice and drawn once.

Speaking on the Die For Three Points podcast, Warnock said: ‘Potter will be worried, he’ll be frightened, but he knows his coaching will take him through it and he’ll have his staff there with him.

‘Deep down underneath he’ll be absolutely terrified of some of them lads! But he’s gonna get through that because as a manager you are going to progress – the £200k-a-week will help him relax!

‘He’ll be terrified underneath at times because he’s gonna come up against egos that he’s never met in his life. When you’ve been at a club like Brighton, and I’m not being disrespectful, there’s not really a lot of pressure.

‘He won’t change as a manager, he’ll try and get those big egos working together as a team, which is easier said than done.

‘If they lock into what Graham wants there’s no reason they can’t become a force again because it’s a great club.’

Potter has inherited a Chelsea side that is literate with the world class talent and global recognition that was missing from the Brighton squad he painstakingly put together over three years.

But the English manager has developed a reputation as one of the finest young coaches in the game due to his work with the Seagulls.

But Warnock – himself a veteran of 18 managerial appointments – suggested that Potter will bring a ‘personal touch’ to the Chelsea squad, and that he could have a real impact on some of the younger members of the squad.

He added: ‘He’ll be himself, but he’ll give a bit more of a personal touch to the squad, especially the younger lads in the squad, like [Mason] Mount.

‘He’ll have more one-on-ones, an arm around one or two of them but at the end of the day he’ll hope he gets a few results early doors because that will help him with the lads as well.’

‘I can’t stress enough – it’s far easier doing that at Brighton than doing it at Chelsea. He’ll have problems that he’s never come across in his managerial career now, and he’ll deal with that because in management you have to learn by your mistakes and your experiences.’
